Former students, friends, family, and great cellists gathered to celebrate the 75th birthday of legendary cellist Janos Starker in the way they know best—a concert. That gala event is presented on Janos Starker: A 75th Birthday Celebration, with world renowned violinist Joshua Bell as host.

The 1999 concert was at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where Starker teaches. It features Starker, playing with his son-in-law, William Preucil, who is Cleveland Orchestra concertmaster. The program also includes performances by former Starker students who are international touring artists: Gary Hoffman, Maria Kliegel, and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi. Also appearing in the 90-minute version of the program are his daughter Gwen Starker-Preucil, violin; and his granddaughter, Alexandra Preucil, violin.

Mstislav Rostropovich conducts the Indiana University Philharmonic Orchestra, and Emilio Colón, a former Starker student, conducts a mass cello ensemble of 153 current and former Indiana students. The repertoire for the evening’s performance includes Bruch’s Kol Nidrei, Popper’s Hungarian Rhapsody, Dvorak’s Rondo, and Brahms’ Double Concerto.

In an interview included in the program, Starker talks with Bell about his cello sound, his career, and his plans for the future.

Janos Starker and Mstislav Rostropovich, two of the world’s greatest living cellists in the latter half of the 20th century, had never before appeared on the same stage or performed together.

Starker, a world-renowned cellist and 1997 Grammy Award-winner, was born in Budapest, Hungary and detained in a Nazi work camp before coming to the United States in 1946. Currently a Distinguished Professor of Music at Indiana, where he has taught since 1958, Starker was formerly a principal cellist with the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago, and Dallas Symphony orchestras. Today he continues to perform as soloist and recitalist on all continents, and gives master classes worldwide. His discography includes over 100 recordings.

Rostropovich has recorded virtually the entire cello repertoire and has inspired works by many of this century’s finest composers. Formerly music director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. for 17 seasons, he has conducted nearly every major orchestra on three continents.

More than 1,400 students from throughout the United States and from 35 countries study with 140 teachers and scholars at the Indiana University School of Music, which has been ranked as the nation’s top music program four times. The school’s annual performance schedule of nearly 1,000 different public programs includes recitals by students and faculty, ensembles, and full-scale productions of opera and ballet. The Opera Theater has given more than 1,000 performances of 250 different operas.

Janos Starker: A 75th Birthday Celebration is a production of WTIU, Indiana University Television; Nancy Callaway, producer.
